KRG Pavilion for Municipality and Tourism Expo

This pavilion was conceptualized to reflect a new, sustainable architectural vision promoted by the local government, while paying homage to Erbil’s rich architectural heritage. The design integrates solid, contemporary materials—primarily concrete, which remains the dominant construction material in the region—with living greenery, symbolizing the emerging shift toward environmental responsibility.

At the heart of the pavilion is a suspended cube, representing the open sky view from traditional courtyards found in historical houses within the Erbil Citadel. Much like those courtyards, the suspended volume not only defines spatial experience but also serves as a source of light, creating a spiritual and atmospheric effect. When visitors stand beneath it and look upwards, they experience a visual and emotional connection to the historic domestic spaces of Erbil—spaces that once brought air, light, and serenity into the heart of traditional homes
